P ink P ublishings
I have named my company name ‘pink publishing’s’. I have done this because I think it relates to my target audience. My target audience is teen girls, and everyone knows that pink is a girly colour. I have also created a logo for my company which is this picture of a heart with ‘pp’ in the middle. This obviously means ‘Pink Publishing’s’ . I wanted my logo to be simple so that it is easily recognisable, like some big company logos like ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twtitter’.Friday, 26 October 2012

My second written analysis on a pop magazine's double page spread!
Another element of this page which catches my eye is the
bold text. It has been printed in large black font on top of a white background
so that it stands out more to the reader. Each text box has been split into subjects and
they have their own information in each separate box. Compared to the other magazine
this one really uses the picture well to create layout, for example her body is
at the bottom right corner and one of her left is at the top left of the page
I think the magazine uses good colours to show its target audience
and really sticks to their genre ‘pop’. It also sticks by the target audience a
genre by having the article about this particular celebrity because she is a pop
singer and a girl, so the page can be full of girly information about her.Just like any other double page spread, this one has images and good use of layout which makes it good to look at. It also has the usual convention which is, having a page number at the bottom of each page.

My first analysis of a pop magazine's double page spread!
The first thing that I notice about this double page spread
is the title at the top of the page. This is always written in bold text in any
magazine so that the reader knows they have found the page they were looking
for or that there interested in. They have also added another detail into the
title, which is that the second word is in a different style of font. This has
been done so that that particular word stands out to the reader. Also notice how it is
located at the top left hand side of the first page, just like a mast head on a
front cover, the title needs to be visible to the reader so they know what that
page is all about.
What is important to think about is the layout. For example this
page doesn’t have writing all over both pages. The main image of ‘The wanted’
takes up a lot of space, this is because teen girls wouldn’t want to read too
much they just want to know all the juicy interesting stuff about them without
having to read too much. They also will have “crushes” on the boy band so a
large picture will interest them. It is also about 'The Wanted' because it needs to keep with the genre 'pop' and they are a pop band.
There are many different ways that a double page spread can
be laid out. In this magazine there are two columns of writing on the left hand
side and another one on the right hand side. Then little text boxes are scattered
around the image to give the page layout and make it more interesting. Colours
is also important on a double page spread because you don’t want dark boring
colours on it, if the reader will be reading and looking at it for a long time.
The page needs to stand out, like on this page the background colour sticks to
the target audience (teen girls) and it stands out. Because of the light purple
colour as a background, they have printed the text in a black font so that it
is easy to read.
It may be a small detail, but at the bottom of each page is another
convention… the page number. This is important because if I want mine too look
as realistic as possible I need to add every single detail into my work. I also
need to make sure that my photography for my main image is good by trying
different camera angles so that the picture really stands out.
My second analysis for a pop magazine contents page!
For my second analysis of a pop magazine, I have decided
to look at the contents page of a ‘W love pop’ magazine. This will help me
understand the codes and conventions of a contents page and will help me get
some different ideas for my own.
Because the first thing I notice about a contents page is that they always have some text at the top of the page, I know I need to make sure that’s what mine has. Another example would be on this magazine which says ‘we love this…’ and then below would be a list of everything which is featured inside.
Notice how this contents page has a different layout to
the first one I looked at. See how down the right hand side of the page there
are pictures of the topic, numbers below and a little bit of description below
them. This gives the page layout and makes the page look more interesting. Because the first thing I notice about a contents page is that they always have some text at the top of the page, I know I need to make sure that’s what mine has. Another example would be on this magazine which says ‘we love this…’ and then below would be a list of everything which is featured inside.
Another difference in this layout is that there is a main image to go with the main cover line in the middle of the page. This attracts the reader to read about their main story which they will most likely have paid a lot to get. For example they might have paid for an interview or for a photo shoot so they need as many people to buy the magazine so they can make the money back.
On this page the house style is the colours blue white and orange these are bright colours which will make the page look presentable. The font is printed in the colours of the house style so that they blend in with the theme and stand out on a white back ground. Each picture on the page relates to the genre and the story topic.
On some contents pages they even include ‘puffs’ which helps persuade the reader to turn to that page. For example on this page there is one at the bottom left of the page which says ‘Hot posters’ this will attract the reader.
My Analysis For A Pop Magazine Contents page
The first thing I notice about a contents page is that they always have some text at the top of the page, giving the page a heading. In this magazine it says ‘inside the mag…’ this just gives the page a subject telling the reader what’s on that page.
If we didn’t have a contents page in our magazines, we would have to flick through every page before we find what we was looking for. That’s why one of the main conventions of a contents page is the page topics and numbers. These are both very important because they help the reader find what they want to read about without looking through the whole magazine.
What’s different about this contents page is that instead of listing all the page topics it has got an image of the front cover on. This has arrows pointing to each topic on the cover with page numbers at the end so that they can see what page numbers the main stories are. Notice how the page topics are all in different categories, this helps split up the stories so that the readers can search for what they want to read about, without having to read each topic.
Just like any page in the magazine this contents page keeps to the target audience with its house colours. Because the target audience is teen girls the colours pink and white really work together, they also help the colour of the text (black) easy to read and stand out.
Another important convention of a contents page is pictures. Most of the time the contents page will have a selection of images which relate to some of the stories, this makes the page topic more recognisable to the reader. For example if one page topic says free poster of ‘One Direction’ then there might be a small image of that poster on the page which draws the reader in. An example on this magazine would be the small pictures of ‘one direction’ and some ‘accessories’ so that the reader has more knowledge about what’s on that page.
My Analysis For A Fornt Cover Of A Pop Magazine
My analysis for a front cover of a pop magazine
For my analysis I have decided to evaluate the front cover
of this pop magazine. This magazine ‘Top of the pops’ is possibly the most
famous pop magazines in the music industry and has been around for many years!
I know that the target audience for this magazine is for teen girls because…
The first thing that draws my eye on this magazine is the
‘Mast Head’ this is written in large bold text at the top left of the page.
This is because when the magazine is on the shelves only the top of the
magazine can be seen; this is why the mast head is placed there. They have also
put the font in a pink glittery serif font which shows me that the target
audience is for young girls.
Most magazines use pictures of top celebrity’s on the front
cover so that attract the reader to buy them. The main image of this magazine
is a large image of a famous UK pop singer ‘Jessie J’. The image of her has been taken at a Medium
close up which helps focus on her face. This is so that she stands out more, so
her fans see the image and buy the magazine to read about her. The image has
been used as the full background of this magazine and everything else has been
placed on top of the image making sure it doesn’t block the face though. Notice
how the background of this picture is white; this makes her and the text stand
out more. And also because she is dressed in black this makes the pink girly
colours seen and stand out on top.
The main cover line on a magazine is the main story in the
magazine and is always related to the main image. It is always somewhere near the main image and
is always put in a large font so that it is easy to see. For example in this
magazine the main image is Jessie J and the main cover line is ‘Jessie J tells
her own incredible story “I’ve beaten my heaters!”’ This main cover line
relates to the main image which is Jessie J.
Another way I know that the target audience for this
magazine is teen girls is because of the house style. House style is used for
any type of magazine, it is the theme and colours used which is repeated
throughout the magazine. For this magazine the house style is pink, red, purple
and white. This is used effectively because they all stand out on top of Jessie
J’s black clothes and the text which has been placed on top of the white back
ground like pink, red and purple stands out as well.
Also on the front cover has plugs on, plugs are more
information about what’s inside the magazine. But there will only be about four
or five plugs on the front cover because the contents page is for listing about
what’s inside not the front cover. Only the top stories will published on the
front cover so that they attract the customer to buy the magazine to read more!
For example on this magazine the plugs which have been used are ‘who is the
fittest? Justin & Harry battle out’ this is on the front cover because the
writers know that the majority of teen girls will want to read about Justin and
Harry because they are both very famous pop singers! Notice how they have also
written a rhetorical question in the plug ‘who is the fittest?’ they don’t
actually want you to give them an answer they want you to think about your
answer in your head and want to read more about the article. Everything on the
cover is written for a reason, to persuade the customer to buy the magazine to
read more. They make sure they use the
correct words to draw the reader in, for example another plug is ‘GaGa at
school, her secret past uncovered’ the word ‘secret’ and ‘uncovered’ have been
used so that the readers think they are
going to read something new about her, something no one else knows.
Puffs are also used on the cover of magazines to persuade
the customer to buy the magazine. For example the puffs used on this front
cover are:
·
Incredible
·
Fittest
·
Hottest
·
Secret
·
Uncovered
·
Embarrassing
·
Spooky
These are used so that they persuade the customer to buy the
magazine to read more. The words sound exciting and catch your eye. Normally
they will but in large font so that the word stands out.

My School Magazine 'Contents page' Evaluation
My Contents Page Evaluation
In this task I had to create a contents page for a school magazine which will go together with my front cover which I made. So just before creating my page I had to make sure I researched conventions of a contents page for and school magazine. This is very similar any other magazine, it needs the lists of page topics so that the reader can find a topic then want to read and also it needs page numbers next to the topics so they can go to the page in which they are interested in reading about. Also on this page I needed to make sure the page kept with the house style which I had done on my front cover. This consists of the colours blue and black.
Because I already knew the cover stories what I was going to put inside, I could get straight on to taking pictures which would relate to my topics. I spent half an hour in a lesson taking my pictures, making sure I thought about camera angles so that they looked professional on my contents page. Then I moved on to starting to put my page together on photo shop. Because I had experience using the tools to create my front cover, this task wasn’t as hard because I already knew what I was doing. First I made sure my house style was the same so I added a blue background to my page, and made sure this layer was at the bottom of the list so every other layer showed up on top. I also added some text onto my page by using the ‘text tool’ which allows you to add text anywhere on the page. The text which I added to my page was my page topics and numbers so that it looked like it was a real magazine. After adding my page listings I added pictures which relate to the page topics next to each page number so that it is more eye catching and interesting for the reader.

My school Magazine Front Cover Evaulation!
When I was ready to start, I went and off and took some pictures to go on my front cover which would link to the target audience 'children who go to my school and there parents'. Because I knew I wanted to put a picture of me and my two friends on top of another picture I needed to think about shots and camera angles when taking the picture. For my image I took a medium shot so that you could see us from the waist up. When I had a good picture, I then moved on to finding a good background picture in which I could edit us on. I decided on a picture of the ‘
Then I started my work on the program 'Photo shop', at first it was hard because of all the tools and options on the program but after some practice I got the hand of it. I started by adding a master head which I called 'school life' this was the name of my school magazine. I did this by using the 'text' option, which when selected lets you add text anywhere on the page. Then I knew I wanted a big main image which would be the background of the entire page. So I had to add an image which was related to the main cover story, which was 'Armthorpe students win a trip to
In this task I have learnt how to use the program ‘Photo Shop’ and have also
learnt about the conventions of any magazine and for a school magazine. Altogether,
I am happy with the results and think I met my own target which was to make
this look as professional as I could.
